Every "best free tools" roundup asks the same question — does this tool have a free plan? — and stops there. The question that actually matters if you report to clients is narrower: can you send what the free plan gives you to a client without apologizing for it first. Those are different questions, and most of these lists never notice.
The question these lists don't ask
A free plan that shows you a dashboard isn't the same as a free plan that produces a document. If the free tier can't export, or exports with a watermark, or caps you at one brand, that's not a footnote — for someone reporting to clients monthly, it's the whole decision. So here's what each of these actually gives you for free, checked in September 2026, not what the pricing page implies.
Buffer
Buffer's free plan is real and current — three channels, ten scheduled posts per channel, and analytics covering reach, engagement, and follower change across your connected accounts. That part is genuinely free, no trial clock running.
The catch is the report itself. Exporting Insights as a PDF or CSV, and the branded report builder with your logo and a cover page, are paid-plan features — the free tier shows you the numbers on screen and stops there. If your client wants a document, not a login to look at your dashboard, that's an upgrade.
Later
Later doesn't have a standing free plan anymore. What's offered is a 14-day free trial of the Starter plan — scheduling, three months of basic analytics, a handful of AI credits — and then it's a paid subscription starting at roughly $19/month billed annually. Worth knowing before you build a workflow around it: "free" here has an expiry date, not a permanent tier.
Metricool
Metricool's free plan is permanent and does include analytics, which puts it ahead of Later. But it's capped at one brand with one profile per network, and the reporting side is deliberately limited: no PDF or PowerPoint downloads, no custom report templates, and a watermark on the analytics view. You can look at your numbers for free. You can't hand them to a client for free.
SocialPilot
SocialPilot shows up on almost every "free tools" list, and it shouldn't — there's no free plan, only a 14-day trial with no credit card required. The cheapest paid tier runs about $20/month for five accounts. If a roundup calls this one free, it copied an older pricing page.
Doing it by hand
The fourth option nobody puts on these lists because it isn't a product: open each platform's own analytics, write the numbers into a Google Doc or Slides deck, add your logo, and send it. It's completely free and it works — plenty of freelancers do exactly this every month. The cost isn't money, it's the hour or two per client rebuilding the same layout, retyping numbers you already had in front of you, and hoping you didn't transpose a digit going from one screen to another.
Poststeady
This is where we're obviously not neutral, so judge it by the same test as the rest: free plan, two reports a month, forever — not a trial. Full feature access, no watermark, no crippled export. You upload the CSVs you already export from wherever you post, map the columns once, and get a three-page report branded to your business with a summary written for you and editable before it goes out.
The honest tradeoff going the other way: it doesn't schedule posts, and it doesn't connect to your client's accounts — you're uploading a file every month, not watching a live dashboard update itself. If you want a scheduler with reporting bolted on, this isn't that. If reporting is the whole job, it's built for exactly that and nothing else.
Which one to actually use
- Already scheduling through Buffer and want a document, not just a screen: upgrade Buffer, or export the CSV and build the report elsewhere.
- Want to check your own numbers for free with no report to send: Metricool's free plan covers that, one brand at a time.
- Want the report itself, free, every month, no trial ending on you: that's the gap Poststeady is built for.
- Comfortable rebuilding the layout by hand every month and the time cost doesn't bother you yet: keep doing it manually, nothing wrong with that until it does.
